The Story of our Rescue Rottie - Sweet, Angelic Fancy!
Sept. 9, 1998, @ 8:00 p.m., Fancy joined our family. We got a call from a friend that knew of a rottweiler that had only 5 minutes left to live.
Her 'owner' was headed outside with his loaded shotgun to shoot her at that moment. Would we help her? We went and picked her up from her "owner" (& I use this term loosely) . He didn't want Fancy anymore because she wouldn't be mean & so he was going to shoot her in the head! Fancy was 1 year, 9 mths old & weighed in at under 35 pounds, gentle as a pussycat and would turn your stomache to look at her! I (DeAnna) , was terrified of Fancy because of her breed.
This girl came to us with the name - " Fancy " , so someone must have loved her once..or at least thought she was pretty. After getting her home, I quickly instructed my hubby to 'put her in the backyard on the biggest chain he could find ". Yes-I felt sorry for her, but I was still terrified of her.
We gave her food & water, which she ate at the speed of light! Her bowls were sat at the edge of her chain, so I could feed her, without her being able to reach me. Back into the house I went, to inform the kids to stay away from this dog.
Well....I didn't sleep much that night. I was drawn to the window looking out upon this pitiful excuse for a living being. . She laid curled in a ball - sound asleep, but if you'd look real close, you could see her li'l nub of a tail wiggling.
The next day - off to the vet we go.I had to carry her all by myself, cause hubby had left that morning with the National Guard. Here I go, driving to the Vet with a dog I'm terrified of! I just knew
that at any given moment, she rip my head off....but she never even looked at me. She laid curled in a ball, on the bench seat .
The vet was nauseated looking at her! She had been run over by a 4-wheel drive pick-up pulling a horse trailor, had a skin infection so bad that her skin was just falling off in hunks, bad case of mange, eyes infected -sunken & rolled into her head, pads were chewed off-raw & oozing, hips were one big horrible , infected sore - you name it! This girl even tested severe Heartworm Positive! Fancy was starving to death, due to being chained up with about 2 foot of chain - laying in her own urine & feces.
*** The Vet gave me a choice : either put her down or help her fight. One look into her eyes and I had my answer ! She seemed to plead.."please don't give up on me..help me".
***So...we began her treatment. First was the annual vaccinations that she had never recieved and rabies shot, a different type antibiotic medicine for every sore on her body (put on twice a day at least until healed),a bath once a week in paramite, scheduled her eye surgery for the next week to put her eyes back where they belonged, the list goes on & on. Fancy was put on Puppy chow to be fed as often as she wanted to eat as long as she drank plenty & bowels worked. Her "owner" had cut the canine teeth off with wire cutters & filed the rest down to the gumline.
***On 9-26-98, we started the heartworm treatment, weighing 58 pounds! Fancy is 100 % recovered from her eye surgery & looks around at everything! She has hair growing now & she eats at least 10 cups of puppy chow every day!
***After many weeks of heartworm shots & limited activity - we say "LOOK AT FANCY - ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL"??? Our lovely Fancy weighs in at 75 pounds & is covered in hair (thank goodness). She lives inside with us & has never had an accident in the house. When we leave - she leaves! Fancy is 100 percent spoiled. She gets along great with all our other pets - with only minor snorts or growls to our 1 male & is wonderful with all our kids !
We love Fancy with all our heart & would never, ever part with her! She's family, now & forever!
Fancy might always limp from her broken hips or have scars from abuse and never win any medals or ribbons.....but as far as her Family is concerned ...she will always hold the blue ribbon.
This is the story of how we were lucky enough to have our lives blessed with the presence of a rescue rottweiler.
Fancy is wonderful & we love her dearly....but please don't get a pet unless you can dedicate your life to it! We don't own them-they own us!
***UPDATE : December 25, 1998 : HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY, FANCY!!!!! We LOVE you!! Our Miss Fancy weighs 85 pounds now! She's Heartworm Negative!! Yeah! Thanks to our dear sweet friends at Rottie-L, we have learned alot about rotties! They are truly unique ---diffrerent from all other breeds!
Fancy is on vitamins & a raw diet with no problems (thanks Lew!). She still gets an occassional raw pad due to being allergic to "something" in our soil! But we love her dearly! She "wiggle-butted" her way into our hearts & is there to stay! It would take the Good Lord above to part us from our Fancy!
We love you baby girl......now and forever
UPDATE!!UPDATE!!January 2000. Miss Fancy has just returned from the Vet for her annual check-up & rabies vaccination. She was healthy enought to recieve a 3 year rabies vacc this time!!
YIPPEE!!!Our girl is a bit overweight @ 120 pounds, so now we face the challenge of getting the extra weight off! Her hips are looking real good & she hardly has a limp anymore. THANKS to her Flexile Plus !!

I thought I'd include these notes I kept during the short time Fancy was with us. Maybe.....just maybe, someone can be inspired by her courage & the strength she found to fight off all the horrible things that were thrown upon her.
September 9, 1998: "FANCY" - full bloodied Rottweiler, born Dec. 1996 - is 22 mths old (1 yr, 10 mths), should be 75-90 lbs & 21-27" high at shoulders full grown. Roman/German ancestry.Got her from "Pee-Wee" - was gonna shoot her - wasn't mean so he didn't want her. He had her exactly 1 year. Got her Sept '97 from a lady who had her 8 mths. Sept.'97 - bred her with a mutt - no puppies lived. In heat several times since.
JANUARY 1998 - hit by a 4X4 on right hip - broken real bad - let it heal on its own.No shots since 8 weeks old. Been neglected real bad - extremely friendly, loves to get attention. Likes kids,
SEPTEMBER 9, 1998 @10:00 P.M. - called Vet - Said to bring her in at 9:30 a.m. & he'd fix her up - don't worry about paying yet.
HEALTH PROBLEMS :open sores covering her body - few are infected appears to have the mange - has nearly lost all her hair raw spot on right hip - open & bleeding & infected eyes are runny & infected - lost hair around them & rash needs wormed & rabies shot......eats ok - walks with a limp & don't really want to get up & move - very stiff
SEPTEMBER 10, 1998 - 9:30 a.m. : Doc says; tested positive for heartworms - will treat this later-is not as bad as her other problems, found no mites-treat for mange anyway-looks like what she has. Paramite-1oz & 1 gallon water once a week (every 7 days) until better. Sponge on since she is so big. This is her biggest & worst problem so it must be treated first. Neo-predef powder on all open sores twice a day until better. Needs surgery on her eyes - they turn in - scheduled for 9-15-98 at 9:30 a.m. can pick her up that p.m. - no food or water before surgery. Will go blind if she don't get this surgery . This is why they are staying infected. Gentocin Durafilm eye drops 2 drops twice a day until her surgery. Gave her the rabies vacc & her annual shots, drew blood for heartworm test. No temp - other than normal. Needs Puppy Chow - good balanced diet.
SEPTEMBER 11, 1998-Friday : called Doc - shes been here 2 days, eating good & hasn't had a bowel movement. Could be a blockage or may take a while for the food to build up in her body before being digested completely. Sign of not being fed for a while. May need a laxative. She's still real sore - stiff. Only gets up to eat & drink. Foot is real sore.not putting any weight on it. Still no bowel movement. Urinates 2-3 times a day - very small amounts. At 7 pm- is looking around more but still not getting up.
SEPTEMBER 12, 1998 : 6 am - took her med better. Was REAL hungry. Ate about 5 cups of puppy chow & wanted more - scared to overfeed her. Was alert when I checked on her every 2 hours. Talked to vet -says give her 4 tablespoons of milk of mag - if no b.m. by tom - give a 2nd dose. If it doesn't work - call back- do not give more. Can mix it with food, water or milk. Should work in a few hours. Usually only takes 1 dose. Never took it !!7 pm - took med good. Laid still & wagged her tail. Ate 5 cups food, drank & laid back down. Didn't eat nearly as fast as she was. Took her time eating.
***** 8 p.m. : got up, walked around sniffing everything in reach. Bowels moved - large amount, normal color & shape - no sign of worms ! Urinated alot (about 1/2 gallon). Stayed up walking around an hour. Laid down by front door for a few hours. Looking around - begging for attention. Active - ACTUALLY TRIED TO JUMP UP TO BE PETTED!! Tried to get in house where we were. Even played with other dogs. Looks good ! walking normal - very slight limp. Appears to be feeling better.
SEPTEMBER 13, 1998: 8 a.m. : hip sore is scabbed over - not open anymore. Front paw is healing nicely - licks it alot. Right eye is still oozy & cloudy. Laid in sun for awhile - then moved to shade - then back to the sun - all day. Ate real slow.was hungry but took her time & didn't gobble it like she was starved. Took all med real good - laid still & quiet. Looks better this morning. Can look at her & tell she feels better & is beginning to recover. Skin looks better - not scratching it anymore. Haven't seen her scratch in 2 days. Washed her cover since she was laying outside.
SEPTEMBER 14, 1998: still alert - b.m. at 8 pm every night - no other times. Drinking okay. Down to 8 cups of food instead of 10. Paw isn't getting better. Has another sore in between toes. Was healing - now it's back to an open sore - running, she licks it day & night. Walking around. Plays with us & really loves being petted. Going tom for eye surgery. No food/water after midnight tonight.
SEPTEMBER 15, 1998 : 9:30a.m. eye surgery
QUESTIONS -
passed roundworms , more dead than alive. Do we dip her thursday or wait a few extra days because of eyes ?
How long do we need to use the powder on her ? Treatment for her paw - the powder isn't helping. Was healing fine - now worse than before.
What kind of treatment for eyes after surgery?
DOC SAYS :3:00p.m. - called to check on her. Doc has been full of emergencies all day - hasn't had a chance to do surgery yet. Will try to get to her this p.m., if not can we leave her overnight & he'll get it first thing in the morning. Will go feed her right now.
**SURGERY - has excess skin around her eyes. Not as bad as he thought it was. Will remove the excess skin & sew her eyes up. This skin should be at the back of the eye - is too old to fix the back of eye - will not get any worse - through growing. (INTREPID SURGERY) Will have alot stitches - remove in a week. Stay completely dry & free of germs & dirt until stitches out. Will have perfect vision after surg., unless there is damage already to her vision. Will be able to tell when he does the surg.
**Start heartworm treatment as soon as stitches are out. Is very slow treatment but good - 99%effective.
**Don't dip her again until after stitches are out.
**Will go ahead & worm her - universal wormer.
**Will look at her paw & decide on a better treatment since powder is not helping.
**Continue drops for 1 week & powder until all sores are healed.Several dogs in back with her - is barking & "talking" with each other. Walking around - perky & alert.
**Will call as soon as he finishes surgery to let us know what he found & how she is.3:45 p.m. CHANGE OF PLANS!!! DOING THE SURGERY NOW!!!!Pick her up at 5:30 p.m. - Was there at 5:15 p.m.. just finishing surgery. took 1 1/2 hours.Doc wants her to go home as soon as possible after surg. - we can take better care of her at home than they can there. We can watch her at night & won't let anything hurt her. Says she needs alot of loving & we can give it to her. Antibiotic cream for her paw, Panolog (nystatin-neomycin sulfate-thiostrepton-triamcinolone acetonide cream) twice a day. Drops in eyes twice a day. Worm pills (drontal plus)all 3 tablets at once at mealtime - worm her Friday. Was real groggy - After an hour - was looking better. can see now. Looked at everything.
7:12 p.m. stood & walked alone. GOOG GIRL!!! Ate 8 cups of puppy chow. Drank a little water. Ointment on paw - she licked it right off. Begging for attention - lays her head in your lap.
7:40 p.m. used potty & peed - alive worms. Then back to sleep. Very tired
SEPTEMBER 16, 1998 : Wednesday-Slept good last night. Restless until 11 pm then out cold. Put fan on her - not direct but lightly blowing over her to keep flies & gnats off her. Didn't want breakfast - laying in shade. Took her collar off because her tie-out wouldn't reach the shade. Used potty - no visible worms. Drinking good. Licked cream off her paw. Acted like the drops burned her eyes but tolerated then.
CALLED VET: what to do about her licking cream off -cannot help if it don't stay on. 5:00 p.m.-Doc says sounds like she's doing good - glad to hear it. Need to wrap her paw with gauze or some type of light bandage to keep her from licking off the cream. If we can keep it on for an hour - the cream will do its job & heal it up. Don't use anything real heavy - it might put pressure on the sore & hurt her, Nothing dirty - of course.
7 PM - put med on her paw & eyes. Washed hip & put powder on it. Wrapped paw in gauze after cream. Mixed a little grease in her food to get her to eat it. Longer tie-out so she can reach the shade spot she chose.
SEPTEMBER 18, 1998: gave her all 3 worm pills. Ate them with no trouble. Had a 1/2 piece of meat after pills. Took all med real good. Has been walking around playing good. Gets up to greet us when we get home or when we come outside. Pouts & hides her head if you don't come straight over to pet her.
Called vet :
Do we need an appt to get stitches out ?
Doc says bring her in Tuesday 9-22-98 (CALL FIRST),will take stitches out & start her heartworm treatment. May need to continue eye drops a few days - don't know yet.
HEARTWORM TREATMENT : SEPTEMBER 22, 1998; first dose - oral<.50> , wait 2 weeks - give a shot that day <.00>& a shot the next day<.00> , PLUS .00 for the hw test (have a different treatment that is cheaper but they must stay a week or so there - treatment is given through an I.V. & they must remain absolutely still through-out the treatment - is not a better plan.) Doc recommends this plan because they get to go home. Is nearly guarranteed - 1% chance of it failing. After the second shot - wait 6 weeks & re-check & put on a prevention plan. We CAN use the Filaribits but it will cost more because she must take several pills a day. Want to put her on INTERCEPTOR for heartworm prevention They take it once a month. Is higher cost for a smaller dog but for her weight - will be cheaper than Filaribits. If we do not have the money - bring her in anyway. We can always work out some type of payment plan later or just wait to pay when we get the money. Total cost to get rid of heartworms =.50. Pay bill we owe on Tuesday when she gets stitches out : medicine & surgery , 2nd tube of ointment .00
SEPTEMBER 22, 1998 - Tuesday :To feed mill to weight her first - weighs exactly 58 pounds - took stitches out, had to give her a shot to paralize her for this (wouldn't let them touch her eyes), can dip her in paramite again tom., all her sores look good-healing slowly but surely, finish up all her medicine & she should be okay. Got another tube of cream for her paws, Her eyes look real good !! Continue drops for a few more days or until all gone. Started heartworm prevention - oral dose. Be back 10-6-98 for next dose (shot) & 10-7 for last shot. Then re-check in 6 weeks.she only weighs 58 lbs.
6:00p.m. - carried her for a walk around the yard - she loved it. Used the potty everywhere we went. Walked about 15 minutes. Is pretty active except when it rains, barks when someone pulls up.
SEPTEMBER 25, 1998- Friday : Is looking & feeling better. Walking around alot, runs as far as her tie-out will let her. Gets up to check out whats going on every time someone pulls up. Barks at strangers. Hasn't growled or even acted like she was gonna hurt someone. Begs the kids to pet her. Tries to get to them Eyes look real good. Is ALOT more active.Paramite bath - 2nd - redo in 7 days. Scratched a sore on her back & it started to bleed a little, then scabbed over nicely. Put med on it anyway.
EVERYTHING LOOKS REAL GOOD. KEEP FIGHTING FANCY - WE LOVE YOU & WANT YOU TO PULL THROUGH THIS 100% !!!!!!!!!
OCTOBER 6, 1998 : back to vet for 2nd heartworm shot.(right backbone) Weighs 70.5 pounds. Has gained 35.5 in the 4 weeks we've had her.gained 12.5 lbs in 2 weeks.
OCTOBER 7, 1998 :Noon - rode to town just to show her that everytime we go bye-bye we are not going to vet. Didn't want to get out at vets last time. LOVED IT - really likes to ride.
@ 6 P.M., WE CAVED IN TO THOSE SAD LITTLE EYES & BROUGHT FANCY INTO OUR HOME. It was cold outside & she was shivering. To potty & back inside. 2:30 p.m. - potty & back in. Very eager to get back inside. No interest in play - only wants petted. Will go to door & "wait" (command used) until all people go out before she goes. Minds her manners & does as told. She layed in front of the couch all night. Moved to the end of the couch at 3 a.m., but never got up & walked around. Was very content to just be inside.
OCTOBER 8, 1998 : 7:00 a.m., ate breakfast ,& sat there staring at us , went out to potty & back inside. Has hair all over--fine growth on butt & elbows are sprouting areas of hair. Eyes still a bit goopy. Hasn't moved from Living Room.
10:00 a.m. - came & looked around the kitchen where I was. Had to tinkle & back inside.
10:30 a.m. - bath in Sergeants & smell good shampoo. was a very good girl-no objections to bath at all!!!
2:30 p.m. - out to potty, walked around, drank water & few morsels of food, resting good, very eager to get back in the house. No accidents yet!! GOOD GIRL!!!! Only wants to be petted. Learning to go to door & wait on ALL PEOPLE to go outside before she does.
OCTOBER 10, 1998 : will come lay her head in your lap or sit & stare at us when she wants to potty. Ask if she has to potty & she goes to door. No accidents yet. Was left alone in house all day yesterday - no trouble. Ate breakfast, went to potty & we left. Back last night & she wanted out but had no accidents in house!!!GOOD GIRL!!!!!!!
OCTOBER 13, 1998 - Tuesday : Tom. is one week since last HW shot. Sun she started coughing occasionally Mon. morning she developed a dry, raspy cough-trying to cough up something, spit up a little liquid once.Today-coughing/hacking when awake, spits up mucas w/ liquid, cut her back to 3 small meals daily, slept all day yesterday, drank 1 bowl water , low grade temp today & yesterday.needs 5 shots of anitibiotics -strong penicillan. Vet was afraid this would happen but didn't want to worry us cause they were hoping it wouldn't. The worms are leaving the heart & going through the lungs-causing infection. This is proof that the meds are getting rid of the HWs. They were hoping she wouldn't be that infested. Come get 5 shots of penicillan to give her. Should be ok. If we don't give her this med-she'll die-guarranteed! Procaine G -3 cc shot in hip muscle once a day for 5 days. Alternate hips each day .00 for meds & needles. Keep in fridge & roll between hands before injection to warm a bit.
OCTOBER 13, 1998- First shot was 12:45 p.m. --last due 10-17-98.
I'M SORRY FANCY GIRL. MAMA KNOWS IT HURTS BUT YOU GOTTA TAKE THESE NASTY SHOTS TO GET BETTER. AS LONG AS YOU SHOW LOVE & DETERMINATION IN YOUR EYES--MAMA REFUSES TO LET YOU GO!! IT HURTS ME WORSE THAN YOU, SWEETY. PLEASE BE STRONG FOR MAMA. I LOVE YOU.......
OCTOBER 14, 1998 : Wednesday : 7:00 p.m. - coughed up bloody mucas , cough wasn't as bad as yesterday. Was more perky in late afternoon. No potty all day.

DECEMBER 10, 1998 : 8 P.M., tripped on tree root , yelped & fell on her face. No signs of injury--other than pride.
DECEMBER 12, 1998 : licking her paw again. eyes runny. Used eyes drops & she let me handle her paw really good .
DECEMBER 13, 1998 : got up a bit stiff this morning. 10 a.m.-started hopping a bit, holding foot up & will NOT walk on it. Yelps when she puts weight on it! Only got up 3 times today..to eat, drink & potty.Tried to doctor her paw & she hollered . VERY PAINFUL.
At 12:30 a.m., gave her a Rhimadyl to ease pain, ankle swollen a bit, watch her-if it gets worse or don't clear up any tonight-get her to vets ASAP. She whined in her sleep all night. Mama held her all night & stroked her to sooth her fears. It appeared to calm her.
DECEMBER 14, 1998 : 6:30 a.m.-woke up starved! putting more weight on the paw but still favoring it. Ate a good breakfast & hurried to go potty. Tried to do her din-din dance but it hurt too much.

I want to share a very special event & do a bit of bragging on Miss Fancy..our sweet-precious recue rottie
Well...we survived our very first overnight guests since Fancy came to live with us.
Technically--it was our first CHILD guest.
I was a bit concerned not to mention on pins & needles.
This was one of the girls from my 5 year old Girl Scout Troop . She has NO pets at home cause her Daddy just don't like animals. The only dog she's ever been close to is a Cocker Spaniel at her Aunts house .
All went well, I suppose. When her mom dropped her off , I made her stay long enough to ensure the child AND Fancy was comfortable . At first, the girl was scared of Fancy. Understandable...a rottie is a good-sized dog...especially to a child that has NO interaction with doggies.
I had Fancy in a "sit-stay" & let the girl & her mom in the door.
They came in & I shut the door.My own kids were standing with Fancy & petting her, in a soothing tone--telling her what was going on. I let the girl see Fancy interact with my kids... Then permitted Fancy to sniff them. I don't know Why, but I felt it was important for Fancy to feel comfortable first.
I instructed the girl NOT to yell or make any sudden moves that might confuse Fancy. After a few sniffs...Fancy gave her approval......juicy rottie-kisses !! YIPPEE!! I told her 'good girl' & release her from her stay position. We all went to the couch to sit down & I had to watch Fancy closely , cause she has a tendency to forget her weight/breed & think she's a lap dog. LOL. Luckily--the only lap she tried to climb in was mine. . I made her get down & she laid at my feet over an hour....just staring at me.
We walked through the house & I showed the girl Fancys' crate --with the usual instructions.."this is NOT a toy--kids should not be in the dogs crate--it's the bedroom for the dogs" etc. Same with the kids' bedrooms....I occasionally let the dogs in there if I'm in there cleaning or playing & I do this to show them that YES, they are part of the family but the 2-legged kids have priority...but as a general rule--NO PETS IN THE BEDROOMS. If I didn't do this, my 3 year old would have Fancy in his bed everynight & we don't want that.
Ok--our weekend went good for a 'first'.
After the mom left, the girl was fine. She left Fancy alone & Fancy behaved like a pro! I was VERY proud of her. By nightfall...they were all as happy as can be! After the girl left <2 days later>, we treated Fancy to a 'girls night out' & gave her plenty of lovin & special treats for acting so nice.
I am very glad to say that the girl left here with no bruises from getting bumped around or sat upon.
We had a great discussion on how to act when approached by strange dogs & even if you know the dog & have petted them.....no child should ever be left alone unsupervised with any pet....regardless of the size/breed/etc.
The mom liked it so much she brought 4 other pepole with her when she returned.LOL
I knew she could do it!! Guess I just get paranoid at times.LOL
THANKS for listening & for helping us become a GOOD rott-n family!!!
